A United Voice, the Burnside Advocacy Plan

Bus Service Improvements

The City of Burnside’s first-ever Advocacy Plan marks a new chapter on how Council champions the priorities that matter most to our community.

This plan takes a strategic approach to engaging with state and federal government decision-makers, securing funding and influencing policies that support the future of Burnside.

In selecting priorities, Council considered factors such as community support, readiness to proceed and city-wide benefit. Council will advocate for initiatives that preserve and enhance the lifestyle, character and liveability of Burnside. The plan outlines key capital projects, ongoing funding initiatives and policy matters shaping Burnside’s sustainable growth, along with smaller neighbourhood projects, delivering lasting benefits for all Burnside residents.

One project supported by the Advocacy Plan is the funding and improvement of the local public bus services and routes. Endorsed by Council in 2022, the Burnside City Master Plan sets a long-term vision for managing population growth, development and transport across our city. Central to this vision is the creation of safer streets that encourage walking and cycling, supported by reliable and sustainable public transport.

To achieve this, Council is advocating for a range of improvements to local bus services, including increased frequency on key routes and the addition or extension of services to strengthen connectivity throughout Burnside. While the State Government is responsible for bus operations, Council is committed to working collaboratively to deliver a more accessible, efficient and sustainable transport network that meets the needs of our community.

Reliable and accessible bus networks are vital for building connected, sustainable and inclusive communities. Bus service improvements support projected housing growth along key development corridors in line with the Greater Adelaide Regional Plan, ensuring our transport system evolves with our city. Enhanced services also help reduce congestion and emissions, contributing to a cleaner, safer environment.

By improving frequency, coverage and accessibility, a stronger bus network enables residents to travel easily for work, education, shopping and recreation and thus supports local businesses. Reliable public transport also enhances mobility and independence for all, fostering community connection, reducing reliance on cars, and improving overall liveability.

At the current time, Council is gathering community transport data that will inform a case for consideration by the Minister for Infrastructure and Transport and the Department of Infrastructure and Transport.
